Sexual Activity
Hi! I'm Petra Boynton.

I'm a sex researcher with over 10 years experience. My PhD is on porn (truly!), assessing the effects of sex in the media. I train health professionals to talk about sex, and advise a number of organisations like the Family Planning Association, and BBC World Service on sex coverage. I've a regular telephone sex phone in on the BBC, and write several columns on sex and relationships.
Your Question
Hello. I’m 16 and I have had sex with my boyfriend only once. We didn’t use any condoms and I didn’t take the morning after pill as I didn’t think anything of what happened as he kept pulling out. I was talking to some of my best friends and they are saying that i should take a pregnancy test just to make sure I’m not pregnant. However the morning after we had sex I come on my period. Do you think I should still take a test? How do i get hold of the morning after pill?
Dr Petra's Response
If you’ve had your period it’s unlikely you are pregnant but if you are concerned you can get a pregnancy test for free at your local reproductive/sexual health clinic or somewhere like Brook www.brook.org.uk. You can find clinics in your area in the phone book, or by putting in your postcode at www.condomessentialwear.co.uk. If you miss your next period you should definitely get a test done.

You can only take the morning after pill within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. You can get it from your GP, pharmacy or family/reproductive health clinic. It is free from most of these places (except you may have to pay at the pharmacy) and you’ll be treated in confidence so they won’t tell anyone you’ve gone and got it.

However, I would suggest that if you are having sex with your boyfriend you sort out contraception asap. Condoms are free from your GP, family planning clinic or Brook. You can also get advice from these places about other contraception options. The withdrawal method you’ve used so far is risky as it won’t stop you getting pregnant if your boyfriend comes before he pulls out. So go and get advice about contraception now so you can enjoy sex without worrying about an unwanted pregnancy.
