The Stiff Dylans
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging looks set to be one of funniest homegrown films we’ve seen in ages and we were lucky enough to get some one-on-one time with some of the stars of the film. The Stiff Dylans play a band in the flick but did you know they’re actually musicians in real life too? We gave singer James a good grilling on comparisons with McFly and crazy fans…

Hi James, so what are you guys doing right now?
We’ve spent the day doing dial-a-Dylans, which is when we call up fans and chat with them on the phone. Most people have been surprised to say the least, we’ve had some nice little chats and we called a girl in America as well. Charlie got a bit over- excited when a girl said she was getting changed out of her wet clothes so we swiftly stopped him from saying anything else.

You’ve not been going long- how have you built up a fanbase in such a short time?
There’s been a lot of work on the MySpace, a lot of fans have come from there and obviously the books the film was based on as well; because of those people are aware of the presence of a band. We’ve done promotional shows in Glasgow, Sheffield, Manchester, and there’s been a lot of word of mouth. The shows have been incredible, the best one so far being the Trafford centre. We had SO many girls turn up and they even broke in to our green room backstage - they got past security! We were just standing there laughing when they came in and they were like “don’t worry, we’re not scary!” they just wanted us to sign loads of random things like iPods, phones and five pound notes. The weirdest thing someone’s asked for us to sign would have to be a shoe or a 14-year-old girl’s boobs! That actually happened but we had to think about what the best thing was to do morally…

How long have you been together as a band?
We’ve been together about a year. Two of us knew each other and the other two knew each other as well. We’ve spent the whole year working on the film and rehearsing every day.

Have you always been musical?
I’ve always been in to music and I’ve always known it’s the thing I enjoyed most but I never thought about singing long term, that came out of the blue. Me and Tom from the band were at an academy in Guildford and the other two were at one in Brighton. A couple of my mates know Newton Faulkner as he and Amelle from Sugababes went to the same school but they they were in the year above us.

What’s being on a film set been like?
Crazy! We’d been recording the songs that have been included in the film and then suddenly we started getting call sheets for when we needed to be on set. We stayed in a hotel and were driven to a venue where people were making up a set to look like a club, and then we had to start playing on stage in front of cameras and things, and playing like we’d be doing it for years. The days were crazy long- we’d wake up at 5am and be playing until 10 in the evening. We were having a great time doing it but it was hardcore.

Were there any jokes on set?
We were quite good on set but when we got back to the hotel, that’s when the banter started. This one time the boys chased me round the hotel and tried to strip me, it was terribly traumatic for me but it was the funniest thing ever for the guys, they didn’t catch me!

What do you think of comparisons between yourselves and McFly?
I don’t mind people comparing us ‘cos I could keep telling people that we were different but people will always still do it. I don’t mind it’s not going to taint their experience of us. Of course if there was a fight, we’d definitely win! There's no competition!

Have you met any celebrities since you’ve been in the band?
We’ve been in the same room as Sienna Miller, Michelle Pfeiffer and Hermione but I didn’t have the courage to speak to them. I nearly spoke to McFly but I had to rush off and do something. I’ve just written a song with Justin Hawkins from The Darkness, that was a crazy day. He’s a very ‘out-there’-kind-of-guy, kind of eccentric. I’ve met James Bourne from Busted and hung out with him. He’s really cool.

Let’s play Kiss, Marry or Push of a cliff-Rihanna, Lindsay Lohan and Britney
OK, Rihanna- marry because she’s a nice girl, she’s fit, she’s a good musician and she’s got a good career going on. Lindsay Lohan - push her off a cliff because she’s terribly annoying and I just read in the newspaper she’s got a girlfriend so she probably wouldn’t appreciate me kissing her. Britney Spears, I really think she some TLC right now so I’d marry her.

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is released this Friday and The Stiff Dylans’ single Ultraviolet is out now.
