Teen Dream
16-year-old Gabrielle Cilmi is living the sort of life that us mere mortals could only dream of – travelling the world, making videos and performing on stage. We caught up with the Aussie singing sensation to find out how she’s coping with the fame game.

You’re originally from Australia – how are you finding the UK?

Yeah it’s really cool. I’ve been living here for a year now, so I’m really comfortable around here. The music scenes really great, there’s bands and singers playing every night and you’re so close to Europe!

Did you find anything weird when you first came to the U.K?
Yeah, everyone used to say ‘Are you alright, are you alright’? I used to think ‘Is there something wrong?’ I kept trying to find a problem with me every time someone would ask. I’d be like, ‘oh yeah, I’m pretty jet-lagged’ or ‘I’m tired’.

Are there words you use that we don’t get over here?
When something’s really disgusting I call it ‘feral’ which no-one seems to get over here!

Do you say ‘fair dinkum’?
Not really, my mum does. I can’t stand that word. It’s too old.

Have you managed to do much travelling while you’ve been in the UK?
My mum was born in Italy and my dad’s parents are half Italian so I’ve got lots of family in the South of Italy, like Calabria and Sicily. So I’ve been there pretty often.

What’s the one thing you can’t live without when you’re on the move?
My iPod or my Rubik’s Cube. It just annoys me so much and I really need to conquer it. It makes me really mad that I haven’t fixed it yet; I might just take the stickers off it and put them back on. The last music I downloaded on my iPod was by Imogen Heap and the Band of Horses album, it’s really cool.

You’re fresh from playing Glastonbury, what was that like?
It was cool as, really crazy! I didn’t realise how big it was, it was huge, like a city! It’s my two favourite things- music and food - in one place, so it was perfect! I was actually in Switzerland the day before, because I had a festival there and then I had to fly to London at like 4.30am then drive down to Glastonbury yesterday.

How are you coping with being away from home, do you miss your friends much?
I miss my friends and I’m pretty close to my family and all my cousins that are my age so I miss them the most. This is the only time I haven’t had a family member with me. I’ve got my cousin coming up this month, then my dad and my brother, then my aunty and uncle. I’m never alone.
