Just Cruzin’
Boys II Men would come off stage and give me hugs!
Music buffs the world over are saying Taio Cruz is the future of British R‘n’B. And, having already co-written songs for Britney Spears, Usher and MYA, and had a top five hit of his own with Come On Girl, we think they might have a point! He’s so good he was even set to provide vocals for last summer’s number one sizzler, Umbrella – that’s before Jay-Z nabbed it and gave it to Rihanna!

As he releases his new single, I Can Be, we thought it was about time we gave the London hottie a bit of a MKP-style grilling. Read on to find out how we found out why he’d like to be Justin Timberlake, would compare himself to strawberry cheesecake ice cream and would love to be able to move objects with his mind...

Can you tell us a bit about your new song I Can Be?

It’s a single that I wrote and produced and it’s designed to inspire people to feel good about themselves. I always believed that I could do anything I wanted to do as long as I believed I could. But there’s always somebody that will tell you that you can’t and there’s always someone who’ll try to stop stuff happening to you… So it’s just a song to tell people that if they’ve got talent or a dream they should go for it.

When did you write it?

It was pretty recently – last year when I was writing the whole album.

Come On Girl was a huge hit, has your life changed at all since you released it?

I’ve definitely gone out and done a lot more shows and met a lot more people. But I try my best to try and stay down to earth because one of my greatest fears is going ‘Hollyweird’, so I just try and hang out with my regular friends and not go to too many celebrity hang-outs or anything. I just to keep it as normal as possible.

What’s been the best thing you’ve done since you’ve become famous?

I was on tour with Boys II Men which was brilliant. It was wicked, they’re really nice guys and they’ve got fantastic fans. They’re so full of life and loving – and they’d come off stage and give you hugs! Yeah that was definitely a highlight.

Can you tell me a bit about what it’s like working with people like Usher, Pharrell, Britney Spears and MYA?

With 2008 technology sometimes you don’t actually get to meet the people you work with. You just produce a track and send it to them and then they send them back and so forth…

So you haven’t actually met some of them then?

I’ve met a couple, I’ve met Ludacris and Ciara. But the stuff I did for Usher, Britney Spears and MYA, none of them were actually in the studio. Although I did speak to MYA on the phone and she told me what she wanted her song to be about and things like that. But not always are we actually in the studio together.

Have you been star-struck by anyone or do you just take it in your stride?

No funnily enough. I probably would be by Micheal Jackson.
