They’ve an average age of just 21 but McFly have already managed to produce so many pop-rocking tunes that they’re releasing a Greatest Hits compilation! MKP sat down with guitarist, Tom, to find out what his greatest hits are…
What do you think is the greatest hit you’ve written as a band?
Probably ‘All About You.” That’s our biggest song I’d say and the one that goes down best in concerts. It was released for charity as well so it just made the whole campaign amazing. I think that’s one of the songs we’re most known for. It’s one of the best songs we get to play live in concert.
Who do you think is the greatest songwriter alive?
Paul McCartney or Brian Wilson. Brian Adams is amazing too - there are plenty of people that we look up to.
What’s the greatest gig you’ve ever played? Do you prefer smaller or larger venues?
Both have their advantages. Being in bigger arenas adds much more of the “wow” factor, but in the small venues I guess there’s more time, it’s more relaxed and you get to mess around a bit more. We played the Leeds festival earlier on in the year, and that’s one of the best shows we ever played I think. It was amazing, the crowd’s response was incredible and it was the best festival we’ve ever been to. It was a bit different for us, but it was amazing.
What’s the greatest way to spend a day off?
Well, I’m learning to fly at the moment so it has to be a nice clear day with not very strong winds. I’ll spend the morning flying and then spend the afternoons at home. That’s all really.
What’s the greatest Christmas present you’ve ever received?
I got a foosball table last year, which was amazing and it’s like the centrepiece of my house really. Every time I have people over it’s the centre of attention, we have proper tournaments on it. It’s awesome - my girlfriend gave it to me.
And what’s the greatest gift you’ve ever given to someone else?
I took all my family to Florida one Christmas as my present to them, for two weeks to the Disney Christmas.
What is your greatest personal achievement?
Writing ten number ones, that’s pretty cool.
What is your greatest physical attribute?
I don’t know. I’ve got no idea, I don’t have any. I’m actually not sure…
Who’s the greatest musician of the four of you?
Oh I can’t say that! That’s like picking your favourite kid or something. I think we’ve all gotten a lot better over the years. I think Dougie and Harry compared from when we first got together to where we are now they definitely have progressed the most out of all of us. Me and Danny have sort of tended to stay where we are, I don’t know, we’re just both the same as we were when we first started. Dougie and Harry have achieved the most, and progressed the most since we’ve been in the band.
