Okay, so you’ve managed to avoid pigging out on a bucket of KFC or a family sized Dairy Milk in favour of a healthy diet but are your healthy food choices everything they seem? We look at seven foods that can be more sinful than you think…
Breakfast
1. Orange Juice:
Like a lot of fruit juice, OJ is packed with natural sugars. Some juices that are made from concentrate can contain as much sugar as your average soft drink so if you can, go for the more expensive 100% squeezed fresh juice and you’ll benefit from the vitamin C. And remember that no matter how much you drink in a day, a glass of fresh juice only counts towards one of your 5-a-day, but make sure you squeeze one in.
2. Cereal:
Everyone knows that cereals are healthier than a fry up, but they can still be naughty if you don’t choose wisely. Muesli can be healthy but make sure you go for a brand that doesn’t add sugar to the mix. Others get their crunch from frosting or a coating of honey – both high in sugar, and toasted cereals often mean a higher fat content. Good old porridge is the best choice for a healthy brekkie. Oats have no added sugar or salt and are ‘slow release’, which means you’ll have loads of energy and won’t want to eat again until lunch time.
3. Bagels:
One densely-packed donut-shaped treat can contain as much bread as five slices of toast! As they’re usually made of white dough and low in fibre, bagels are quickly digested, leading to an energy crash later that can trigger sugar cravings. Choose a wholemeal variety (preferably coated in seeds) or instead, two slices of wholemeal toast (with a fibre level of more than 6g per 100g) with a little dab of low fat spread and Marmite (which is packed with vitamin B) and you’ll be satisfied until lunch.
