Career In Make-Up Artistry
Offer to assist a good make-up artist, for no payment if necessary
Lee Pycroft is a world-renowned make-up artist who first made her name in the 90’s working on shoots with supermodels like Tatiana Patitz and Cindy Crawford for uber-hip magazines I-D and Arena. She has since worked with Kate Moss for a Vogue cover and Naomi Watts for the Vanity Fair King Kong cover. She’s also worked with Gywneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Sienna Miller… the (A)list goes on! We caught up with the talented lady and official spokesperson for Rimmel to pick up some tips on how to break into a career in make-up.

Name: Lee Pycroft
Age: 40
Where do you live? London
Job: Make-up artist

My job involves…
Working on beauty shoots creating the latest trends in make-up, adding a touch of powder and sparkle to the faces of celebrities! I’m also the official spokesperson and make-up artist for Rimmel London. This involves presenting and demonstrating at launches and giving quotes and tips to journalists from magazines such as Vogue and Heat on how to use Rimmel’s new, innovative make-up.

I chose this profession because…
The thought of painting faces, travelling the world and getting paid at the same time seemed too good to be true!!

I knew I was in the right job when…
I found I had a natural ability to see what was going to work on somebody’s face, and loved every minute of it.

On a day-to-day basis my job is…
Fun, creative, challenging and tiring!

To train for this job I…
Did a brief make-up course to help me establish the basics in make-up then worked like a Trojan to network my way into the business, assisted well known make-up artists and practiced my art. The more you practice the better you get!

The qualifications I have are…
Some college education, after which I did a two year course in beauty therapy, hairdressing and even wig making! It prepared me for any eventuality! This isn’t a necessity but I enjoyed doing the course anyway. I have also made a study of self development work. I have attended many courses as I believe that application, self belief and the power of thought are as important as any formal qualification.

The best thing about my job is...
Travelling all around the world and working with gorgeous celebrities like Elle McPherson before their red carpet moment is obviously fantastic, but I also love helping the everyday women discover their beauty as well as demystifying make-up. That’s why I chose to work with Rimmel London - they know how to relate to the everyday girl and woman.

The worst thing about my job is…
The inconsistency when first starting out, long flights, jet lag and having to cancel social engagements at the last minute. Apart from that, none!

The advice I would give to someone starting out is…
Offer to assist a good make-up artist, for no payment if necessary, this will introduce you to a set of skills that will be priceless. Or, enrol on a make-up course that is run by a respected make-up artist. Then just practice!

A common misconception about my job is…
It is always glamorous! It isn’t! A lot of it is hard work, long hours and my hands getting very, very messy!

My ultimate career ambition is…
To become a ‘brand name’ known to everyday women and to offer inspirational, fun and practical advice to women everywhere.

Here’s a few of Lee’s favourite Rimmel products;

  • Rimmel Magnif’ Eyes Mascara
  • Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in Asia
  • Rimmel Colour Mousse Eyeshadow in Glitz
