I literally, no word of a lie, gave out 41 CVs in my town a week ago. Not ONE reply. Just applied for two more actual jobs tonight although one seems slightly dodgy :S lol. Cross your fingers for me! I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall with it all at the moment.

Most shops don't need any extra staff. If they did, March was the time. Some shops cannot afford to hire extra staff, some (like mine) because the wages budget is low while profits are still high, and others, like Burton, part of Arcadia..can't afford to because sales are way down.
Your best bet is a supermarket tbh.

Luckily, I've been trying to avoid shops, as my mates have all been applying there with no avail. However, my other friend works for, well, basically a call centre where people moan up and whinge about their cars. And luckily, they're losing 7 staff soon to Uni, so I may be in luck. I've got a CV and covering letter ready. Not that I'm expecting much really, as a lot of people will probably be applying. But it's good hours and good wages, so fingers crossed! And actually, looking at my CV, it's pretty good! I'm happy now =]
same same im stuck in a rut printed many cv's off and handed them in all over town... to places that where looking and havent heard back from anywhere :@ i dont wanna work in a call centre but anywhere else that will have me i'll be happy =]
Many shops will start employing towards the end of Augst, when all the staff who are going to university leave. Also in smiths we dont take C.V's as appliation forms are marked on a a points basis, dont know if other stores work like this. So if your intereted for working in WH Smiths, Download an application form from the website and hand it in at your local. Blimey, even though im not at work yet I still advertise the place.

you all seem to be looking in shops whch arent the only place that employ people. Infcat they're one of the tougher places to look if you have no experience because they want employees to have retail experience.
You should type in 'student jobs' into google and it gives you a couple of websites dedicated to part and temp jobs for students. Some of the sites are crud but I found a couple of good ones.
