Posted - 12/05/2008 : 14:00:12 I know this is probably a pain and that I've already posted it on the exams board but not enough people visit that. I have an english intermediate 2 exam on thursday and am freaking out because I have real trouble analysing quotes. These quotes are from talking in whispers by James Watson, and I'd appreciate it if anybody could help me with the analysis and evaluation of these? "Tears of grief transformed the landscape into a seawash of greys and browns and fading blues" "SAVE THE JUNTA TIME AND BULLETS - SHOOT YOURSELF" "Andres was among the crowd but his voice came pitching out, shrill, shaking, 'You murderers!'" "News of their deaths would give no comfort to their loved ones. But Andres knew; nothing was worse than uncertainty." "They choose their own routs about the city and their own methods of terror. They burn. They kill. They celebrate. 'God bless the Junta!'"
I know its tons to ask but I'd really appreciate it! xx |

Posted - 12/05/2008 : 18:07:20 I've never read the book so its hard to analyse random quotes without putting them into context but. . . the first one 'tears of grief . . ' is a metaphor for how sad he/they were. It's creating a dull and dsmal atmosphere through the use of drab colours - grey, brown, faded blue. Also, blue is a colour often associated with sadness. The fact that it is faded could mean that they are past sadness and now in some kind of despair or acceptance of the situation.
The one that says 'save the junta . . .' just means that this person is hated so much that he is wanted dead but is not worth the time or another persons bullets, so he should do the deed himself.
The one that says 'news of their death . . ' basically means that they dont want their loved ones to be dead but finding this out would be better than not knowing at all. They want closure.
I just picked out a few. As I said it's hard to figure some of them out without putting it into context. Hope I helped x x x
