Wacked Out
I’m a person who is really self-conscious, so it was a huge step for me to take off my clothes.
Olivia Thirlby first caught our attention as the ultra cool Leah in the smash hit indie flick Juno. One of Hollywood’s new wave of cool young actors alongside the likes of Blake Lively and Emma Roberts, she’s fast becoming a red carpet style icon. Her latest movie is the New York-based dark comedy, The Wackness, alongside Mary Kate Olsen and the gorgeous Josh Peck (of Nickelodeon’s Drake and Josh). We caught up with her to find out about working with Sir Ben Kingsley and making mix tapes…

What aspects of your character (Stephanie) did you relate to?
I related to her so much that I just decided to play her as myself. It’s not necessarily that I related to her actions, but the way that Jonathan [Levine – the writer/director] wrote her - she just came off the page and I got a very strong sense of her personality, especially being a New Yorker myself and the idea of her being a more experienced girl with a less experienced guy.

Did you like the idea of the girl being in charge in the relationship?
It is far more true to life - I mean there is just no comparison. Girls feel like women in their teens and guys are just little kids. Ha! It actually reflected a lot of my experiences and what I liked about Stephanie is that she just doesn’t care. She likes being the one to guide Luke and take his virginity.

Was it difficult playing a character who is so comfortable with her body and sexuality?
Yeah, especially as I’m a person who is really self-conscious, so it was a huge step for me to take off my clothes. Even being in a bikini was a big deal.

It’s set during a heatwave – did you actually film it in summer?
OMG yes – there is one scene in the bathroom where they had to get loads of changes of shirts for us because we were sweating so much!
