If you haven’t quite had your fill of dance rom com film just yet, then you’ll be pleased about the next to hit cinemas, Make In Happen. We caught up with Mary Elizabeth Winstead who plays Lauren in the film, a wannabe dancer who ends up becoming a burlesque performer in a Chicago club whilst trying to get in to a prestigious dance academy.
How much fun was it to play Lauren?
It was a lot of fun, it was definitely gruelling to be a dancer for a couple of months but it was fun to live that life for a little bit.
Do you think you’re anything like Lauren – can you relate to her life?
I definitely can. I went out to the city when I was young to work but I didn’t have an urge to break out as strong as Lauren’s/ I can relate to having a dream, and going after it , having to beat down doors and keep going, I can really relate to that struggle. It’s even harder being a dancer than an actor, the toll it takes on your body for a start, plus having to be rejected time and again, but it’s very similar to acting. I’m glad I chose the acting route!
What did all that dancing do to your body?
It was pretty bad, the rehearsals were 10 hours a day for a month before we even started shooting, then when we did start there were 16 - hour days of dancing all day, so it was pretty intense. I ended up with lots of injuries and trips to the physical therapist and chiropractor with all sorts of back and neck problems, but that’s the life of a dancer. My sister’s a dancer and she constantly has to work on whatever injury she has at the moment – it’s the life they lead. After I finished shooting I didn’t do any exercise for a really long time. I tried to eat really healthily but didn’t diet, as when you’re doing so much activity you need to keep eating to stay healthy. I ate lots of salads and was having protein shakes every couple of hours to try and stay strong as it’s very athletic.
You come from a dancing background but if you had to chose right now between acting and dancing, what would you pick?
Oh dancing for sure. Oh no- I mean acting! Whoops! I wanted to be a dancer for a long time but I realised early on I couldn’t take the physical toll and the exhaustion, and I didn’t want it bad enough to go through all that. When I started acting I still got the love for performing that I’ve always had but in a different medium.
