| Good Catch |
In Catch Me If You Can, Leo plays 17-year-old Frank Abagnale, a gorgeous, charming con-artist who manages to convince the world he was a pilot, a lawyer and a doctor. Sounds ridiculous? It's based on a true story. The real Frank was a master of deception and made hundreds of thousands of dollars out of his scamming. We couldn't resist chatting to Leo about what it was like being Frank
Leo, you played a character who constantly pretended he was someone else for five years. That's five years of solid acting! Sound like a nightmare?
Leo: I would say so yes. After meeting Frank I really understood how instinctive an actor he really was. He got into characters, he researched the role, he put on the proper attire, he understood the lingo and he went out into the real world and gave terrific performances every day. But one of the interesting things that I learnt from speaking to him was that he never had anyone who he felt he could really communicate with. No one really knew his true identity. He was perpetuating this lie constantly every day. Looking at it from the outside in, it could look like a pretty lavish, exuberant lifestyle, but after a while it wore on him.
