WALL.E (U)
The Pitch
You’ve got to give it to Pixar (the makers of Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Ratatouille and Cars, to name a few) they know how to make seriously impressive animated films and their latest is no exception to the rule. Set 700 years in the future, WALL.E is darker than your average kids flick and gives an idea of what life could be like if we don’t look after the planet. Abandoned by the human race, Earth is covered with rubbish and waste, leaving a single lonely and curious robot named WALL.E to clean up the mess. All that changes however, with the appearance of EVE, a girl robot sent from space on a reconnaissance mission to find out if humans can return, who WALL.E then falls in love with! Our heroic robot rescues the ladybot from a sandstorm and hitches a ride back to her cruise ship in space, where all the evacuated and now grossly overweight humans live, video chatting, sitting in hovering chairs all day and being fed by tubes- ewww!
The Talent
As they’ve proved with their past monster successes, Pixar don’t have to pull in the big name actors to voice their films in order to bring the characters to life (which are interestingly rarely human). However, Sigourney Weaver who you might know from the Alien films provides the voice of the ship’s computer.
The Verdict
If you only see one film this summer, make it be WALL.E and you won’t be disappointed. The attention to detail is incredible and there’s a real moral and message to the story which is that we need to look after the world before it ends up a mess!
