Speed Racer (PG)
The Pitch Speed Racer is a young man completely obsessed with racing whose main goal in life is to win The Crucible, an important car rally, in dedication to his older brother Rex who died in a racing accident. With the backing of his close family Speed turns down an offer by a big company, Royalton, to race for them, which angers the company, making them determined not to let Speed win at any cost. He soon discovers that corruption and race-fixing are rife, which spurs him on further to go head-to-head with Royalton and save his family business.
The Talent Emile Hersch has that cute, boy-next-door quality down to a tee and he’s completely adorable. Christina Ricci looks so much like a Japanese anime character that we can see why she was the obvious choice for Speed’s love interest Trixie.
The Verdict The Wachowski Brothers, famous for The Matrix have taken things to the next level entirely with this, their live-action cartoon. Whilst the script leaves a lot to be desired (and there are some very large helpings of cheese in there) there’s no disputing that it’s a visually stunning film, full of intense colours, sharp graphics and cutting edge CGI animation. If you’re vaguely interested in these aspects of movie making it’s an interesting watch, if not you might want to side-step Speed Racer.
