Journey To The Center Of The Earth (PG)

The Pitch
The film industry is awash with remakes right now, so brace yourself for yet another. Based on the book and 70’s film of the same name, it tells the story of an intrepid science professor and his nephew trekking across Iceland. The pair discover a cave that leads deep down in to the middle of planet Earth and are spurred on to find out what really happened to the professor’s missing brother, also a scientist.

The Talent
Watch out for 16-year-old actor Josh Hutcherson, who plays Sean Anderson, as we think he’s heading for greater things in Hollywood. His uncle Trevor is played by Brendan Fraser of The Mummy fame.

The Verdict
Hmmm, sorry but this one should have stayed in the 70’s. The effects look dated and there’s something lacking in the plot and script departments. Rather than re-hashing another classic we’d have loved to have seen some twists and deviation from the original storyline. Perhaps seeing it in 3D (at limited cinemas) might add to the magical experience but we’re not convinced.
