Case study: Pierced
Hi! I'm Dr Petra.
I'm a psychologist based at University College London and I research sex and relationships. Fire away and ask me what you need to know. Don't be embarrassed - I'm here to sort out all your awkward, personal, and just plain confusing problems
Your Question
I need help all I ever seem to do is lie, to my friends and family and I’m so scared that Ill get found out but I can’t seem to stop. I have two lots of friends I tell one lot the truth to and blatantly lie to the others the sad thing is I have a great life anyway, so I don't need to lie. I think I get a thrill from it or live the life I could live. Oh and I’m a very convincing liar because I had a long time to practice.
Dr Petra's Response
You know you don’t like it, and you know you do it. So you have to be the one who stops. Lying often stems from feeling insecure or anxious and once started can become a habit. You could decide that from now on you won’t lie. You could even decide to be brave and come clean to those you care about and say you have lied in the past but you won’t from now on. Or you may find that if you know feeling insecure or anxious, or having communication problems is causing you to lie that you seek support from a counselor to help you break the habit. I’d only opt for the last choice if you can’t sort things on your own. Given you know what you’re doing and it upsets you I think, with a little self control, you should be able to start with a clean slate and decide not to lie any more.
