Case study: Pierced
Hi! I'm Dr Petra.
I'm a psychologist based at University College London and I research sex and relationships. Fire away and ask me what you need to know. Don't be embarrassed - I'm here to sort out all your awkward, personal, and just plain confusing problems
Your Question
Hello agony aunt! I had my belly button pierced in december 2006 and until now it has been great! i love it and its one of the few things i like about myself. But at the start of this month i noticed that the bar had started to rise up to the surface. The part of the bar that is supposed to be under your skin by about 4mm is now right beside the surface of mine, and you can clearly see the belly-bar through the extremely thin layer of skin!! What is going on?? Please help me, will I have to get my belly re-pierced? Will the skin open fully?? Can i ever have a bar again? Please help me...
Dr Petra's Response
I’d do two things here. I’d speak to your GP or practice nurse in case the piercing has become infected, and I’d also speak to the place you had your piercing for their advice. If it’s not hurting and there’s no discharge I’d speak to your piercer first, but if it is sore, leaking or smells bad head for your GP.

Hopefully if you sort this now you’ll be able to keep the piercing although you may have to change from a bar to another style of jewellery that might suit your body shape better.

It could be that your body is naturally ejecting the piercing, as it's only a surface piercing, so as the skin renews itself, the bar gradually moves to the surface.
