Body Image A-Z
We look at the pressing body issues covering the entire alphabet – that’s a lot of knowledge!

A is for Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia affects teenage girls more frequently than anyone else, but it’s a condition that can happen in teenage boys as well as adults. Marked by an absolute obsession of being thin, anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder causing those affected to starve themselves sometimes to the point of near death. Anorexia affects the victim’s mental state of being as well as their physical features — even when an anorexic is remarkably underweight, they’ll still say they feel ‘fat’. Anorexics are often depressed and irritable toward others and in complete denial that they have a problem. They need both the support of their family and friends to beat the disease. If you have suspicion that anyone you know might have a problem, it’s best to speak up. Catching the disease in its early stages greatly increases the chance of recovery.

B is for Bulimia Nervosa
The second most threatening eating disorder targeting teenage girls is bulimia nervosa. A person suffering from this chooses to gorge on a lot of food only to then make themselves vomit the food back up. Bulimics don’t lose nearly as much weight as anorexics, but the disease is equally dangerous. People with bulimia nervosa try to hide their disease from others; often they will opt for taking laxatives as a way to purge the food they ate so no one will question their behaviour. Again, the same caution regarding treatment should be taken with bulimics, as they are hesitant to admit they suffer from an eating disorder, much like anorexics.

C is for Cigarettes
In Europe there has recently been a clamp down on public smoking and this may soon come into effect in the UK too. Smoking is one of the main causes of lung disease but its effects are caustic for the whole body. Did you know that smoking (even in small amounts) leads to bad skin, wrinkles, bad breath, tooth staining, as well as general bad odour? And that’s just on the outside! Internal effects include a lowering of hormone levels, reduced lung capacity, an increase in the risk of common illnesses and major conditions such as lung cancer or emphysema. Quit now!
